#introduction Hi! I'm new to NOSTR. I've been trying to understand the protocol by my own, although I now realize I think it's better to ask the people! So is this a decentralized , censor-resistant version of "X" , or something...else?

Replies (40)

yeah, it's primarily that, but it can also be other things; there's yakbak voice messages, chat apps (E2EE), and even a github alternative welcome to nostr! ๐Ÿ’œ
VOOCE MESSAGES? I've been trying to find how to send them and I'm literally unable, just like the articles , I don't understand how to make them I'm so lost. Thanks anyway for your reply, love you description btw

That will depend on the app you are using. NOSTR just the base protocol, the apps will be the ones that give you functionality ๐Ÿ™‚

Thatโ€™s a start. But itโ€™s so much more than that - you can make almost any app on top of nostr
Yeah basically Nostr is the protocol that โ€œclientsโ€ aka apps are built on. Iโ€™ve never used a voice message client but it sounds like itโ€™s out there. I use primal, damus and Satlantis primarily

We trying bro .. but it's hard getting anywhere past the established influencers
Welkom, Archie. The big difference.. people don't scream at each other here. ๐Ÿ˜Ž
That's a big one! It's not just another platform, for me is my first social media I ever use , besides YouTube in case that counts XD

I see it as NOSTR is a decentralised Authentication layer. (The glue that sticks everything together) Basically we create accounts on NOSTR which can then be used to sign in on any app or service that integrates with NOSTR. The benefit is we keep our friends lists and anything else we tied to our Nostr identity through the different events and kinds when we log in to a new app. That's about as far as I got with understanding it so far ๐Ÿ˜„
Which is fat more that I understood, so feel proud! I'm probably going to take a look at Amethyst to see what it offers to my nostr use. ๐Ÿค
Thats how I currently use it, but theres a ton of stuff here. Encrypted DM's, market place, livestreams, etc. If your on android amethyst is an app that integrates a lot of the different things.
I'm exploring Amethyst rn and I couldn't be more lost XD I feel so old right now, and I'm so young, paradoxically.
Primal is a good option for beginners, though it'll feel exactly like Twitter (and that's fine for me). As for other clients, there are things like Rabbit (Tweetdeck-like), and Ditto (similar to Mastodon, because Soapbox is a Mastodon client). I heard Amethyst was good for Android, though I don't trust the weaponized WoT (Web of Trust) algorithm, as that's a social credit system implemented. That's the same in Iris, as they do the exact same thing.
Please note: while both notes and the "other stuff" are actually transmitted through the Nostr protocol and stored on Nostr relays, media typically is not, nor are Git repositories (instead, they are hosted on, possible multiple, Git servers).
The original and primary application is decentralized and censorship-resistant microblogging, so in a sense yes. However, other kinds of applications, which work in essentially the same way at the lower level, have been built on top of it.
I actually disagree with this. Ok, maybe you *can* make most apps (I wouldn't say almost any) use Nostr, but you probably shouldn't. Not everything, not even everything that is good, is the best tool for everything. Nostr is good, but far from perfect, and it's often, but not always, a good tools to use, along with others.
No to what? To knowing more than one tool instead of constantly using it out of place?
Welcome If you'd like some help about this weird protocol we call NOSTR I wrote some guides here: I would start with this one here for some basic concepts: If you have questions, the tagย #asknostrย is a good place to start. Enjoy freedom speech and money.
Nostr is kind of like this thing on the internet. I donโ€™t use X so not sure if itโ€™s like that.
Nostr is a protocol. Like Bitcoin. Like IP/TCP/HTTP that the internet is built on A base layer You can build anything on it you want. Interact how you want Nostr in particular is a communication layer, anchored around a user centric identity, and the worlds first at scale implementation of micro-payments Because of the way the user transmits information to multiple relays, can use many clients, all with the same key pair, itโ€™s very hard to censor, and is likely the bastion of digital freedom for years to come X is a private tech company A digital monopoly On their turf you play by their rulesโ€ฆ The coolest part about Nostr, is not just the social media style notes, but the other stuff. Have a look around for the startups pitching using the Nostr base layer, youโ€™ll see health, insurance, travel concepts, all built using Nostr In short: Nostr is a key part of the freedom tech stack of the future, and is the place to spend your time Enjoy ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป
Omg best explanation I've ever heard ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿป So , basically, this is what we'll be using when democracy gets finally dismantled! I definitely gotta learn how to use it โ˜๐Ÿป๐Ÿค
