Define "on here" - nostr isn't a centralized entity. You're free to spin up your own relays and create communities that work for you. The default relays are obviously Bitcoin centric (plus a bit of fringe right-ish weirdos).

Not trying to dis you here, but from a protocol perspective (and not the concrete app experience with most clients out there today that fiatjaf already alluded to), what you are saying reads like: We tried getting to get people go outside, but the onboarding for people to go out of their front door is a fucking nightmare. There are all these people outside they don't like, and it is not a fun place to do something if people i don't like also exist in the world. Don't take a bunch of vegans to a street that is full of meat-centered restaurants. Don't take a bunch of blind people to the creative street art neighborhood Don't take a bunch of prudes to the redlight district. By which i mean to say....there are no 'space' constrains here, there is absolutely no reason to be ''in eachothers way'' and to visit places that are completely irrelevant or offensive to you. Again, i understand the practical reality is that you experience a real problem, its just that there is no, i dunno how you call it....''technically'', reason for that problem to exist at all. And what i would say is that you are not powerless in this regard at all, the tools and means for YOU to fix those problems do exist, and i am sure there are plenty of people more than willing to help you with that. I’m not sure I’m following this. It feels like calling the fediverse a pedophile ridden network. Like sure there is a lot of dubious content over there but that has nothing to do with the underlying protocol. And you’re not forced to follow accounts generating said content. What is it exactly that’s turning these people off from the nostr ecosystem? Is it that apps default to seeding posts from annoying accounts/relays? This feels like a similar discourse I heard regarding Odysee (formerly LBRY) and then instead of trying to change it the so called left wingers decided to fall back to centralized YouTube once again. And now they’re complaining about the corporate overreach and enshitification… At some point you’ve got to pick the least of two evils and it’s insane that these people considered the decentralized protocols to be the inherently worse option.

Yeah, there's a bunch of shit that could be done to improve onboarding and new user experience. But I'm not a Dev so I can't do it. Need a client with moderated hashtag feeds so people can actually find shit when they first get here. Referral links, why is BCHnostr the only client with referral links? Those who are more organised, journalists that already have their own websites could create their own relays, then you just need at least one of them also running a relay aggregator that relays the relays to users interested in independent journalists.

YouTube and other centralised platforms are where the audience is at.

I've been trying to onboard my friend from Gaza to nostr for a year, he has made two npubs. The first with primal, which at the time only had the kyc custodial wallet which blocked people from Palestine making wallets. Then yakihonne, which he just struggled to learn and had poor internet connection at the time. Abandoned / lost keys for both Surviving is already stressful enough, doing things he already understands is difficult. He doesn't have the energy to learn new things that aren't directly correlated to survival. People have no idea.

Hashtags moderated at the relay level are nice. The dilemma with doing it at client level is the sheer number of possible hashtags that exist and God only knows how many relays each will connect with at a given moment. At the relay level, different topics or collections of topics can be moderated by different groups or individuals and presented/shared as discovery feeds. wss://aquaticchickentheory.nostr1.com is an example of 25+ hashtags, streamed in from public relays & filtered by my WoT.

New users, during the initial onboarding process shouldn't even need to look at their relay settings. Default relay setting for onboarding needs to be a relay aggregator with a fallback aggregator if it fails. Most nostr clients are not consumer ready, people gotta learn how to replace the break pads and oil filters before they can learn to drive without an algorithm. After people understand how to drive they are ready to look under the hood and modify things.

I heckled Christensen on tiktok and upscrolled for leaving nostr until I stopped using them. Now I only see him on xiǎohóngshū on the rare occasion I go on there, I still tell him to come back to Nostr, to try other clients. He only tried primal. The bots on here impersonating someone from Gaza make me so incredibly angry I don't have the words for it.

I disagree. I believe Nostr can succeed greatly when people stop trying to make it look and act like something that it is not, but there is always more than one way forward.
