An 80 year old family friend called me for financial advice because her kids wouldn't "help her buy crypto" I'm advising her to buy $100 of Bitcoin on nostr:nprofile1qqsrtv3u6qkj6a09tnhr3l0wy67g9uw3t57ftqyqpvztpk3wmd6306spp3mhxue69uhkyunz9e5k7qg4waehxw309ajkgetw9ehx7um5wghxcctwvsueqn9x, giving her nostr:nprofile1qqsxc56ajk5xtxerf4dqspgrfa0s5elrcr80lnz9nasldq87j3zzf0cc5h4hk's The Big Print and telling her that after she reads it I'm happy to help What would you do? image

People having a good experience with Bitcoin upon my recommendation is something I take super seriously. You put your reputation on the line when you give financial advice. Told her to go check out river and that I would help, but need her to put in some work for us to get anywhere anyway

My dad called me up 2 days ago to ask if now was a good time to buy bitcoin, he had his bank account closed for some bogus reason, and the new bank offers bitcoin saving plans. I told him everyday is a good day to buy bitcoin, and right now it’s on sale.

I think The Bitcoin Standard would be a good book to read. Once people have made a bitcoin transaction, there is no going back.

Personally, I'd just have them buy gold since they are 80. I love the sweet corn, but at that age, it's a lot to handle. Gold will treat them well and give them a piece of the action.

River vets everyone who applies using some intrusive KYC database "security" service, and they will deny you an account if you have ever engaged in political wrongthink or gotten on the wrong side of the regime in Washington.

Haven’t had time to read my copy of it yet, but Natalie Brunell’s new book “Bitcoin is for everyone” might be a good intro.

I send my family/friends to Strike because the app is easy to use, DCA has no fees, and auto-withdrawal to cold storage also has no fees (when they’re ready to learn about cold storage). Haven’t tried River so can’t compare them, but heard good things about River. For less technical people, who are scared of real Bitcoin, I explain how they can buy FBTC in their Fidelity account if they want exposure to Bitcoin without needing to learn anything new.

Don’t forget to explain the volatility and importance to DCA slowly over time. It’s possible that now is a good time to put a chunk of money into BTC and get those sats at a discount but nobody really knows - it could dip even further and at 80yo, the wait for a rebound might be painful.

I think I’ve had most success getting people to download a really simple lightning wallet like “Muun” (happy to hear about any recommendations for simpler newbie lightning wallets because Muun has it’s limitations) then send some sats into the wallet over lightning so they see how fast and easy a Bitcoin transaction is for even small amounts of money. They also like getting money for free - so that helps.
