Modern social platforms are convenient, but they come with serious hidden costs. Your account and content don’t truly belong to you. Platforms can ban you or delete your work at any time. Algorithms are designed to exploit your attention for advertising profit. And because platforms don’t interoperate, you’re forced to maintain multiple accounts across different services. Nostr was created to address these problems. In Nostr, there are no traditional accounts—only cryptographic keys: npub (public) and nsec (private), similar to Bitcoin. You can share your npub so others can follow you, but your nsec must remain secret. Every post is signed with your private key, meaning your identity is fully under your control. The apps you use are just interfaces, called clients. Your identity and followers don’t change when you switch apps. Messages are delivered through relays, which can store and transmit data but don’t own your identity. Even if one relay blocks you, your presence continues through others, making the system censorship-resistant. Nostr also supports instant Bitcoin tipping, known as Zaps, with no platform fees.
