Senator Alex Padillaβs office has issued a statement following his earlier detention by federal law enforcement in Los Angeles. According to the statement, Senator Padilla was attempting to ask Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem a question during a press conference when he was forcibly removed by federal agents, taken to the ground, and handcuffed. The senator has since been released from custody.

It is normal for the opposition to be arrested in a democracy, yes? π

Aren't senators have immunity from arrest or something?
No one is above the law, in theory, , surely?
Not unless they are on their way to an official vote.
That man has a right to defend himself.
Yes in theory. They have protection when attending or travelling to their house though.
I didn't realise it was only limited to attending their house.
He is being tresspassed, but he is refusing to leave. You don't just get to walk into a building uninvited and claim "self defense" when they try to get you to leave.
That seems reasonable and sensible.
Yeah. It doesn't say they can't be arrested or anything. Rather they cannot be detained to slow a vote. After the vote, they can absolutely be arrested however.
Looks to me like he's at a public event. Regardless, if he didn't touch anyone, and others touched him, he absolutely has a right to defend himself - lethally. And nothing else matters in the slightest. Not what he said, not what he looks like, nothing.
Now fuck off, moron.
Christ, I'd rather do just about anything before escalating to killing another human being. I'd say any excuse I can come up with to avoid escalating to attacking or killing someone matters very, very much, especially a security or police officer.
Also, clearly it's not "public" in the sense that anyone can show up and shout whatever they want. It looks like a closed meeting for certain members of the press and other allowed individuals. Clearly they decided that he would no longer be considered an allowed individual.
Are you trying to tresspass me from this comment section? Lol
I presume they have more rights if they have diplomatic immunity when they travel
Absolutely not. It is merely a function of not allowing local police or a state to stop a federal vote.
It stems from the old days of days long trips by buggy to Washington. Not a 2hr flight, lol
