On legacy social, algo-fuelled ragebait is the main tool you can use to boost your perceived credibility and reputation.
On nostr, your reputation is tied to long term keys. The most valuable asset is your credibility and trust among other nodes, which has to be earned over time the old fashioned way: interesting and positive interactions, sharing content, etc.

Credibility shouldn’t be tied to keys and I don’t think it is. I have the same level of credibility under this identity as I would creating a new one if I told everyone that’s my new npub. We want to create an environment where it’s easy to port your credibility to new keys.

My 2cents, I think @Karnage is on right track. I am always reading fantastic gems from npubs with no following, and they generate no reactions. And those with big following not saying anything different and getting loads of love and sats. Thats an X style influencer influence on Nostr. Of course the big hitters here have a lot to say and bring it on, but overall it should be a meritocracy, and its not oie in the sky idealism, because we do actually get to choose who we follow, we do have the agency to seek out the quiet corners, else this magic protocol is going down another road to echo chambers.

The algorithms are designed to do one thing and one thing only, increase engagement to increase exposure time to ads. What increases engagement the most? Negativity. So they boost negative content and suppress positive content.
On Nostr the negative content has no power if we all simply ignore it.
I received a negative comment from someone last week. "Shut up loser" is all they said, I just blocked them and moved on. The best action is no reaction, to not give them attention. Let them be negative in their little corner of the Internet, doesn't affect me cause I won't engage with it and neither will the people who I do engage with.
measuring the characteristics of an artificially aged npub (the ones they grow in batches like sustainable farming or the matrix, depending, for the purpose of reselling in bulk to spammers) so that those characteristics can be identified to avoid manipulation of dumb systems that use only account_age as a dimension for evaluation. i.e. accounts that appear mature but are actually just harvested to resell will often have a few posts after registering and then nothing for x amount of time or a high percentage of duplicate posts or an identifiable posting increment. machine learning might figure this out faster

I would have rather not had a preloaded list of the popular talking heads, or perhaps a B-lister list, users have a small following that has arisen from zero. I guess the discovery tools are a work in progress.
Going even further, instead of lists of users, I could have done with a super concise welcoming video with the transcript of how to get going in Nostr. Each client would have agency over what user guide they push to newbies, another differentiator.
Or how about two-for-one, the A-lister in the preloaded follow list earns their bacon and they do the welcome to Nostr presentations! :)
My first impression of Fountain was that some prominent users were nicely set up ready for the launch,. Meanwhile, I know I'm not the only Nosr user fumbling around trying to get Fountain to work like a Nostr client should.
