Day 5 of a normie. Feeling a bit disappointed with Nostr but increasingly fascinated by its people.
Would you agree that people use social media primarily for consumption and connection? If so, I think we’ve become extraordinarily good at producing and distributing content, but remarkably inefficient at discovering people worth knowing. Being visible is not the same as being known. Content can now be manufactured almost infinitely, and perhaps the next great opportunity in social media isn’t finding more to consume, but finding more people to connect with. For a protocol that could make human connection its greatest advantage, I find Nostr remarkably difficult to navigate socially.
Can I speak to the manager, please?
Is anyone working on browsable hashtag directories, both across Nostr and within individual profiles? I’m looking for discovery without having to know what to search for in advance. I just wanna choose a subject and click on it.
Freedom from an algorithm shouldn’t mean freedom from discoverability.
How hard is it to build that?

These would look great in the hashtag directory!

FWIW you can try
as one way to discover content and people that are being approached by zaps. I know it’s not what you are asking, but that’s one signal that you can use today.
I do agree that discovering connections here (or any social media) is getting hard to impossible. It is in fact a hard problem, and maybe there is a way to do it effectively using a cheap AI model to build a dossier and match people to some level.
Open to more ideas.

Well, you can only surf and check out so many people.. Over time, you find interesting people & things. Just takes time.
Turns out it’s incredibly hard to build these things AND keep them maintained and online for basically no budget. Nobody has cracked monetization here, and value for value doesn’t keep the lights on. We had a search engine and metrics dashboard once upon a time that just vanished along with its developer one day, because he didn’t feel like running it for free. We even tried to ask him to let someone take it over, but that never happened.
Unfortunately none of the devs care about hashtags or new people being able to find anything.
If you're on nostr you're expected to already have been here for 3 years.
I followed the same people that the person who invited me was following and then found new people from what those people were sharing
Or maybe just a client with in house hashtag moderation that way the discovery tools that already exist can work as they are meant to.
I'd be happy if anyone actually gave enough of a shit to attempt it, but as it stands not a single nostr dev even cares enough to try

Look, I am not in nostr client development business. I am not funded for it, or interested in it. There were a few well-funded (some) and dedicated devs for that, but not something that I ever pursued or was interested in. Any nostr specific client-looking things I make are on my own time and penny, so doing it for me mainly and out of passion. I understand and share your frustration, and I gave up after waiting for 3+ years 🫂🫡
You discover people who come up on your feed or interact with you by looking at their profile individually and decide if you enjoy their page. It’s a slow and grueling journey.
You’ll find them though.
I honestly don’t put in the effort anymore to add everyone anymore. 👀
The spam and reposts get out of hand.
Just discovered you, followed 😂🫂🤌🏻
Probably you are trending now, that's help probably 😉
I reckon we’re celebrating our Nostr birthdays on the same day :-)
I haven’t counted, but for me it’s probably about day 5 since I arrived here.
> I find Nostr remarkably difficult to navigate socially.
I feel the same way, but it’s getting better every day!
Trying new clients always helps. I use Nostria a lot and it has a For You page which can help a bit. Trending feeds can be useful, you can check the comments on popular posts and see if anyone catches your eye, then check out their posts. Stuff like that.
Finding relevant and timely hashtags automatically isn't the easiest problem, but it is doable, even if the computation is done locally. That should be a thing.
There's a thing called 'Follower packs' that let you create or join a group of people with similar interests. I made one for just musicians, we should use it more on nostr. Social media used to be about connection with friends and now it's about consumption driven by surveillance capitalism. I hope nostr can fix social media.
Sorry that was not meant to read like it was directed at you @The Fishcake (nostr.build)
You already do enough for nostr, I mean that genuinely.
I'm just frustrated that no one has addressed the hashtag issue, your idea about using AI to filter and tailer feeds is good but I don't think it's a good idea to offer that service for free for it will be a money pit.
No offense taken, all good! 👍
Paid relay could technically do it, with some tuning and per-user adjustments based on user prefs. We’ve discussed this some time ago, just no takers so far
Some clients have trending tabs.
Have you tried relay feeds already?
I can't really relate because i don't really care for 'social media'(whatever that means) to begin with, never was on any of those platforms for the most part. Im using Nostr for Nostr's sake. Nostr IS my interest😅
So i probably having an easier time finding interesting things and people as a result, because besides a lot of Bitcoin (which also happens te be my interest/scene) Nostr consists out of a lot of Nostr developers for the most part.
But @npub1cgcw...2ndy maintains a bunch of interesting relay feeds that are normie friendly.

Good morning!
What you are going through is normal, so... Try not to be too disappointed with the normality of your reaction to this strange system. 😁
There are quite a lot of people poking at discoverability, but, most tend to offer up approximately the same lists. (This is one reason why I don't trust forced discoverability, via algorithm or not.) All my follows have come from others reposting notes that seemed interesting or amusing or thought provoking enough for me to do at least a cursory glance at some of their other notes and decide to add them to my follow list. The ease of changing that list (by adding, subtracting, or blocking entirely) is rather excellent and nearly ubiquitous.
You may speak to the manager. The manager is you. You are, ultimately, the shaper of your nostr experience. Of course, you can't do much on your own, but as a manager, you may hire and fire as you see fit, and you may set a budget for tools that you currently do not have (I don't just mean monetary budgeting!), and you may even determine that this is not a position you wish to have, taking your leave of it entirely.
You have a clear idea of what you want. I'm not sure anyone has built that thing just yet. Nostr fosters builders and creatives, but, not necessarily *any* builders or creatives. There is so much freedom, without focus, it is hard to achieve anything. The list of interesting but never completed nostr projects would make your head spin. And, to repeat, nostr is still a young technology. There are some common paths, but no well-worn roads. I have found that relying on serendipity is the most pleasant way to wind my way through the bewildering cacophony of activity going on. That does take time. I am patient enough for that
You ask how hard it is to build that. Well, to do that without a central authority that invasively knows everything you do for the purpose of manipulating your mind and soul primarily to sell you junk you don't need and more nefariously keep you angry and scared so you are easily manipulable is, actually, rather difficult. And yet, people are working on it. You've already reached a good audience, and I suspect that once you share your longer writings that you will further your reach. It may very well be that once that occurs, what you seek naturally gravitates towards you, since "you shall find what you seek" is a very old and wise statement of fact, but it does require that you know what you want and often what we think we want isn't going to bring us what we think we ought to have. (This is a mostly self-referential statement... 😅)
The other issue of hashtags as discovery is that many of the popular clients basically ignore them. I think this is a tragedy, as I like hashtags, but, they also are easy to abuse by bots or scammers or the puerile who enjoy disgusting people or the trolls who attempt to frame people as being as disgusting as the trolls themselves are.
So, to sum up: patience. The nostr of today is not the nostr of tomorrow. Discussion helps shape the future, so you are already doing more than enough to help bring your vision to fruition. Others have made very good suggestions in their replies. I've opted to take a meandering ramble that hopefully fills in some of the "whys" you have lurking behind the words you've shared.
Best nostr client so far, its clean and doesn't have a lot of nonsense features. I've tried primal, ditto, poster.place, coracle and snort; and nostrich was the best.
I suggested Jumble and a few good relays to browse. Happy to share more.
Hashtags are a double-edged sword since anything that gets remotely popular immediately becomes a spam vector. That's even a problem on centralized platforms that people just tolerate because "my insta" 🙄.
A service like Brainstorm makes them fairly usable but it does involve signing up for the service & using specific clients and/or relays. It's not exactly helpful for someone just starting out, in a multitude of ways (at least, in its current stage)... unless of course the individual starts by, say, looking from someone else's perspective via viewing a relay-based filtered hashtag or topic feed directly, such as wss://aquaticchickentheory.nostr1.com or wss://chillstr.nostr1.com ,for example.
For what it's worth, though, Amethyst shows a person's followed hashtags on a profile tab.
The initial crux of this post was about finding interesting people rather than consuming content. Hashtags support the latter. If you want to find people, you have to look for them where they reside, which is on relays.
Try nostrich.org i think it allows filtering feed by saved tags
You right

Discovering new people and content is difficult on Nostr.
It is why reposting is an important thing to do.
Just keep changing clients until you find the one that fits!
Hi! Quick technical question: if I make a note and ask people to reply to it with a photo, can most users attach photos directly to their replies? Thank you! And have a great weekend!
Yes. That's easy for most clients to handle.
Thanks!
I watched you on YouTube. You were one of the videos I found out about nostr.
I don’t think I know how to create or join groups just yet, but I’m definitely going to look into that. Thank you! And the social connection part is exactly why I’m on Nostr.
Glad you’re here!
Punctuality has always been one of my major flaws. Sorry I’m a few years late, but I’m here now!
Maybe part of solving monetization is recognizing that Nostr is more of an advanced international airport (still under construction though), and not just another airline trying to compete with the established ones.
I agree with this analogy. Nostr is not Xitter or Faceboot without a company. It’s more like TCP/IP for your online identity.
Our online identities are fragmented now since most of us exist in several different places on the internet and getting buried under an enormous pile of ai generated content. Why not organize those individual presences under one digital identity that no single institution can erase? @The Fishcake (nostr.build)
