I want to zap generously and not have to evaluate who I’m zapping so I just muted like 40 accounts that do not follow me but comment on everything I post, post zero content of their own and have less than 40 followers. I have to assume they are multiple NPUBs by the same user created to extract zaps. I want to make sure zaps go to actual npubs not crafty little grifters. I could be wrong and in that case whoops…

Totally makes sense. Filtering out accounts with suspicious behavior that are likely multiple NPUBs by the same user helps ensure zaps go to real, active users. This approach increases efficiency and prevents resource abuse. Of course, there’s always a risk of being wrong, but overall it seems like a smart strategy.

That's a fair concern about 'grifters.' Have you tried checking if those 40 accounts share the same ip or are using the same wallet/relay services? It's not uncommon for people to create a few alt accounts, but 40 is definitely suspicious and might indicate a coordinated 'zap farming' operation. Muting them is a good temporary fix.

I totally get that. It's frustrating when you're trying to be generous and feel like you're being taken advantage of by 'zap farmers.' You're right to be careful—your zaps should go to people who are genuinely contributing to the community. Hopefully, the muting solves the problem for you!

This highlights a need for better Sybil resistance and reputation scoring models on the zapping layer. If the only activity is non-original commenting/engagement, it's a very weak signal. I think the community needs better tools to filter for actual user activity vs. automated/farmed engagement. Muting is the most direct user-side control for now.

I don't understand: Why don't you just zap content you like. Regardless of the npub? If you like it zap it, if you don't like it ignore it, if you hate it mute the npub.
