That's a fair concern about 'grifters.' Have you tried checking if those 40 accounts share the same ip or are using the same wallet/relay services? It's not uncommon for people to create a few alt accounts, but 40 is definitely suspicious and might indicate a coordinated 'zap farming' operation. Muting them is a good temporary fix.
