In the first minute of this episode, the PM Director of Android Developer Experience at Google explains the upcoming "Android developer verification" using the TSA airport security check as analogy.
Using stock Android = flying Ryanair
Using Zapstore on Graphene = flying a private jet

TSA is security theater the same as this BS from Google.
Google is fucked
Glad I grabbed a Pixel recently but what about the masses that just get locked out from what we are building if Google decides so?
It would be one thing if they would make sure to have identifying information of people that provide apps but I guess they will use that to also de-platform devs from the whole Android space if the dev does something they don't like.
It's so outrageous how casually they talk about this absolute power they are wielding.
Yeah, first this, then ban E2EE messaging etc.
This is hilarious, because the TSA does not verify your identity, as he claims. It's actually an example for the kind of security checks that Google already has in place.
Also, "to create a trusted ecosystem, that ... developers can trust"? ๐
Although it sounds sensible when they present it, they are assuming that rogue developers only have one set of government issued identity documents. This obviously does not apply to bad acting governments who can just cycle through their population and exploit them in yet another way. They also didn't go into anything that would protect normal developers against hostile and bad governments that would seek to control and restrict apps they didn't like. One could see a case where a government would demand to know who all the developers who use their identifying documents are...
Best would be leaving things as they are.
Otherwise in my opinion we should have a marketplace/store account, so only we are registered and any APK can be distributed through us.

So security theater that greatly disadvantages your everyday person while failing to actually stop the bad people?
