I have a real love-hate relationship with owning an older home. There are constant projects and repairs to be done, which are not only costly but a real time sink. On the other hand, I really enjoy feeling capable and learning from each project and acquiring new knowledge. It’s just a real bitch in between the start and finish of the project where I don’t know what I’m doing and I can lose motivation because I feel like I don’t know what I’m doing and can’t do it.
It’s a good metaphor for most things in life. Going through the chasm to completion is almost always the hardest part.

On the bright side— any home built within the last 10 years is an absolute fiat travesty and is already falling apart.
Indeed, however if you get something from the 60s out in the sticks like me, most likely it was one drunk guy who finished most of the project with, “fuck it, it’s good enough”.
Damned either way.
Not comfortable doing something = growth.
Got news for ya... Owning ANY home is a constant battle of upkeep. Newer homes are built like shit but you won't know that till you take down the drywall and see the corners cut. In the 12 years we've owned our 90's home we've basically redone everything. Some we did ourselves (demolition is easy) and some we paid others to do because it was a better trade (like plumbing in and custom building a whole new bathroom) in cost vs time. Enjoy!
Replaced pane of glass today looks bit shite but it's my shite old homes for the win
Just Do It! 🤜🤛

I always used old house projects as an excuse to acquire more tools. Now that I’m older with a really nice stack of tools, I don’t want any more repair projects😁
My progression of old home ownership:
1. Love.
2. Love-hate.
3. Resent.
4. Moved to a new home, then remodeled it for maximum newness. 😂
😂 Better than the 2024 homes where the whole build is "fuck it, good enough"
Our 1930s home has been a bitch to update, but we couldn't rebuild the same quality for even 2x the price
I feel this. It cuts both way, deeply. 😂
I have a deep fear of moving because I don’t wanna feel like I build this little paradise just to walk away in a few years.
You are not alone…
CA?
Amen, I’m with you! Going to be starting a DIY perimeter drainage reconstruction next week. My home will be protected from groundwater as we head into the rainy season. I look forward to standing over the grated sump and watching the rain water flowing off into the storm sewer. May we all be so blessed!
