I use brave as my browser and every time I accidently "search" by typing in the address field, the results always seem scarce and irrelevant.
Maybe I'm just using it wrong.

Brave search is solid. I did 1 search with Kagi and was thoroughly disappointed.
Brave Search and Mojeek are both good, and use their own search indexes, including their own image/video search indexes.
Kagi... "Privacy matters"... Give us your email.
I tend to use Brave, but every now and then I end up falling back to Google if it can't find something.
Brave is definitely better than google. I would recommend giving Kagi a try a few more times and challenge with more complex questions.
