many people think of vr experience like having a giant screen in front of your eyes.
no, it’s a completely different experience, it’s truly immersive.
in fact, it’s kinda scary how easily you can trick your brain. with just the sound of wind or a whisper, you can feel a literal sensation, just because your body expects it. it’s insane.

None of them are anything I'd buy, especially since you need to have a dumb account just to use one. (That I know of.
privacy is a fair reason, especially since the only decent option is meta quest, apple just doesn’t have any apps/games yet & the rest of them are bit niche.
my mom also hates vr but for different reasons, she says this feels very dystopian, she says this is not the future she wants to see, where everyone is just on these glasses 24x7. i am acceleration, but i understand her perspective.
What’s your favorite game and system?
honestly, it depends. i got quest plus, you get a huge library of free games & they keep adding more. but we are few, I play more often.
i play tetris a lot when traveling.
thrill of the fight 2 is my go-to, super fun & feels like real exercise.
asgard’s great too, & meta already has a solid lineup of good games.
mini golf & more. I am also planning to subscribe for its fitness apps. I have heard lot of positive things about that.
I'm a big fan of VR, but I don't agree when you say Meta is the only decent option. You talk in your post about immersiveness, but that's what the "niche" (as you call them) headsets are attempting to maximize.
I recommend people get an OG HTC Vive if they have a budget and can only afford Meta range product. At least vive has an upgrade path toward supporting the highest quality VR you can get and with limited vendor lock in.
Wake me up when there is a decent option that can be tinkered with privately and with open source.
3d printing community is honestly one of the best for open source imo, no exaggeration. millions of 3d models for almost anything, easy to adjust with any cad software.
some designs are super premium & really well made. it’s a pretty awesome community, with all kinds of people. worth exploring and being a part of.
VR is awesome! So much fun =3
The biggest one that affected my life in a very positive way would be VRChat.
I completely agree with it. Despite me playing it on PC, I got some great connections through VRChat as a 4+ year user on the service now.
heard of it before but didn’t pay much attention. googled it just now, & it’s honestly pretty interesting. i think i’ve been living in a vr echo chamber, since everyone i know is just using quest or vision.
i know there is whole PCVR space, but i haven’t really looked into it, but i think i should
💯 Bitcoiners should restart the maker movement
My reply was to VR, which really isn't open at all.
meta quest os is android under the hood. you can technically access it file system, install apks, maybe even root it.
it has a debug mode it’s kinda like a official jailbreak, lets you install alt stores like sidequest, bypassing quest store.
hardware is solid on quest 3. but if you’re after future hardware upgrades, look into pc vr

one thing though, meta can end this anytime.
most common way needs an app from quest store. if they remove it, sideloading gets way harder.
& with full hardware control, they can even kill previously sideloaded apps in one update.
so that’s always a possibility.
I know a few using Quest, and their decision seems to be driven by either not owning a powerful enough PC or getting it because it's what their friends have.
Most good PC VR sets use lighthouse tracking. Requires additional setup/permanent space installation, but the tracking is at least superior. Lots of hardware supports the lighthouse tracking which was developed by HTC and Valve teaming up, so you can mix and match controllers, headset, and full body tracking to your liking.
No way I'm going to buy a hardware that I know can change the TOS at any moment. Pay a hefty price and then learn you now have to provide additional KYC to use your fancy screen or something? No, thanks.
very fair, pcvr is definitely the way to go then. in fact, the guy i mentioned in my previous reply, i highly recommend checking out that thread, or maybe even talking to him. he had a strong opinion about my choice of meta quest, which i totally get.
he suggested a headset with not only open hardware but also a new tracking technology that’s kind of becoming an industry standard, developed by htc and valve.
i’m also planning to explore the pcvr space, maybe in a few months. by then, i’ll have a better answer.
