If users are so obviously desperate for engagement that they will use something like Buzzbot, why haven't Nostr clients focused on developing better discovery mechanisms? #asknostr nostr:nevent1qqsfksgyq202s4393l0p3xhemay5rwp0nzta4u36y94tl83ych9npecpz4mhxue69uhhyetvv9ujuerpd46hxtnfduhsygx74dua47su90jtffkn4jsn27mv4g9hgjl5dt2jnfdwgepgs4u7dqpsgqqqqqqs7f26qz

I guess it depends on what you’re looking for. I don’t go on Twitter to see people talking about Twitter. I don’t go on the fedi to see people talking about the fedi. If you want to engage with people about the platform I think you’re inherently limiting yourself. Also. Damus has a Twitter account….theres tons of other accounts dedicated to nostr on other platforms…not sure what your point was with that. (Actually I do. I’m just giving you the benefit of the doubt)

We'll see how long it lasts. It's only been around for a couple days, it's a novelty right now, and a few influencer ties have noted about it. $boost was a similar thing in 2023 that disappeared. I think people are going to find that fake, paid for engagement doesn't amount to anything in the long run.

I mean if you do it in a way that's not classless I could see it having a place. Like: read a long post and then have an extra incentive to engage where the poster and reader benefit from aligned incentives. It's novel rn and will lose that, but it's seemingly useful and not shady in my mind

💯 This is why pay2trend and pay4friends will never really work, it's just fake engagement to pump follower count. The people that want that can have it. It's also useful signal for people who want authentic community & conversations *not* to interact.

yeah I was hyped up on buzzbot thinking it was pretty cool but it extremely quickly turned to an exploit and an anti-signal.. going to be interesting to see the continued developments for discovery and zaps

When I first started using nostr via the primal app it was so difficult to find people worth following I almost gave up on nostr. Then I tried amethyst and openvibe and found a bunch of people to follow on the global feeds. It took a fair bit of work. Going through muting more than half the people that primal automatically followed(homoerotic cryptobros and scammers) and finding people actually worth following. At first on primal I tried looking up hashtags, but bots use hashtags more than anyone else here so that wasn't a good way to find people. There definitely is room for improvement

Discovery mechanisms on Nostr are especially hard. The client, if it's just a client (i.e. if the only servers it talks to are relays, and a mere HTTP/HTTPS just for hosting the client itself) doesn't have the whole database at its disposal. Each relay has different data and the Nostr protocol is limited. Finding good heuristics for discovery which can be implemented in a way which is efficient and fair is hard.

To be fair, nostr is a deep topic on nostr. A network with10-20k daily actives can only really have 2 or 3 topics with enough depth that people think that network is a worthwhile place to talk about them. The rest would be just Potemkin topics. Sure a few people can post cool shit about, say, cars here, but that will not make nostr a rewarding place to talk about cars. People will go to Reddit or somewhere where they feel there's actually a depth of conversation to be had, and one on the specific car niche that they're interested in. (Here it would quickly devolve into a much of "that's cool" or "love it" comments from people who don't know what else to say.) In perspective, there are many Facebook groups and Reddit subreddits with more real people dropping by each day than all of nostr. So it's pretty understandable that conversation here circles around just a few topics.
