also, you don't really have to worry about annealing or tempering them because they are both so soft at room temperature compared to other metals, where rigidity/elasticity or shock resistance may be critical

I was taking a jab on US Treasury who still value their gold at 42 bucks and oz .. who would do that ?
Either a genius or a bureaucracy would. My bet is they tripped and fell into the genius move.
@ᴛʜᴇ ᴅᴇᴀᴛʜ ᴏꜰ ᴍʟᴇᴋᴜ that's actually really good to know, that low melting point. That should be considered a point in favor of gold or silver being good money, since a melting point that low should present very little challenge to people for the purpose of verifying purity or purifying.
