Yes. I have heard that it is 1 molecule away from plastic, which doesn’t stop us from consuming it one tiny lil’ bit, on occasion. A pity it is so delicious. And cheese toast will NOT puff up and brown correctly without it.
The melt is why it’s perfect for burgers! I’m just as unhappy about it as anyone.

I haven't eaten that shit in over 10 years. Real cheddar is better in every way.
I never ate it until I met @npub1uens...7y76 in college. I did not consume butter or cream before that either. Everything has its place. Toasted cheese with cheddar does not approach the American Cheese experience, however delicious cheddar is, a fact with which I wholeheartedly agree. If I am having cheesetoast or burgers, it is the American Food Product!

Just use the broiler for a short time for good cheese toast, it's way better. Life is too short to waste it eating fake cheese.
