Does this have to stay open until it's syncs? It's taking forever and being so glitchy? Keep having to restart the node to actually see the progress synchronized image

Are you running it on a raspberry pi? You shouldn’t have to keep the tab open and it should just work. I had similar problems but it was because I was running it on a raspberry pi with a crappy cable connecting to the external drive which constantly failed. Probably want to check your drive connection and seee if you e got enough memory on your machine to effectively sync the chain in a reasonable time.
How long have you been letting it run. Just leave it for a day or two and come back. The numbers don’t always display accurately, but you can always check the logs to see what’s happening. Assuming you're on Umbrel, you can go to the community forum, or jump into the @Nodestrich Community ♾️ chat if you want to talk to other Nostriches who run nodes.

It's been running for a while. My sparrow wallet just isn't connecting to it because I'm assuming it's not fully loaded

Yes a pi. There is some memory left.like it's not full but it's close.
Yeah I let my raspi 4 umbrel sync for a week and it never succeeded. I downloaded knots on an old thinkpad with an i7 and 16gb of ram and it unfinished the sync in a day and a half. I don’t really use my raspberry pi4 much anymore. I’m an old thinkpad kinda guy now.

I'm using a rasp pi with a 1tb. It's been good for years and it just doesn't seem to sync. It's not catching up barely making progress
Oh, wait. I think I know what might be wrong. Your 1 TB drive is not adequate for the blockchain and all of the Umbrel software anymore. You’ll need to double that to 2 TB minimum. Also, because it’s a RasPi, it will take significantly longer to sync than a standard PC because of its underpowered processor.
OK I apologize my other comment is ridiculous without context. the "CP attack" on nodes is well known and always had different mitigations and legal theories in bitcoin history. my comment today is in the context of this note, from the "bcore vs knots" mempool war: View quoted note → If you find this issue concerning I would encourage you to do your own research on this issue. At the least- be aware of what it means to run a node and understand that you have some control- to demonstrate your intentions using the software.

Also did you just buy a used one? And wipe it -- not the best with computers it seems relatively easy to do this
if you can live without web ui I recommend ditching the umbrel for dietpi. you can sync the blockchain data on ssd very fast if you plug and mount it into a desktop pc booted from a live debian 12 usb stick. a bit of a learning curve, but can extend your raspi life by years.
It doesn’t have to be on all the time. When you need to verify that you’ve received a transaction you can just turn it on, open knots or core and they’ll grab the blocks you missed since going off line. It doesn’t take too long to catch up on a few weeks or months. If you wanted to run a lightning node then you’ll need to be online but let’s be real—even the big brain hacker types on here who run their own lightning nodes are constantly running into issues with their node. It’s a pain to manage and maintain and loads of services exist that do a great job for very little money to maintain one for you. To your second question. It’s relatively easy to set up an old think pad and they’re everywhere on eBay. I have 2 intel i7 16gb ones that I got off eBay. Plug in a new hard drive, a usb stick with an os and follow the installer prompts and you’re good to go.

How much does the hard drive cost? Where's the best place to get one
Depends on how much space you want—you can get a decent 2tb one for 80 usd. You need at least 1tb as the btc blockchain is near 700gb now. Just have a look for 2.5-inch SATA solid state drives. And find one at a reasonable price point. I just get them from Amazon.
