Temperament and Habits Shy and nocturnal: European badgers are active mostly at night and spend much of the daylight hours sleeping safely underground. Peaceful nature: They are generally not aggressive and usually retreat from danger or humans rather than fight. However, they can defend themselves fiercely if cornered. When I was a child, we would throw peanuts into the garden and stay up late to watch the badgers. I lived close to a place called 'Badgers Mount'.
