Like it or not, you devs are leaders. If you speak to each other childishly (I'm not accusing you), the plebs in the trenches will amplify that. So I think you need to reach out to someone who is level headed and plan a public discussion, and go slow (I don't care if it takes an hour or a week) and address all misconceptions on either side.
