"Digital identity" is not the same thing as having an ID card in the EU. It is much more dangerous. Digital ID is a number, a unique identifier, which will be mandatory for everything. Ultimately, digital ID means that your ability to do anything could be taken away by the government at any time. - Pick up a package? ID. - Ordering from Amazon? ID. - Buy a smartphone? ID. - Go to the pharmacy? ID. - Buy a plane ticket? ID. - Go to work? ID. In the EU, we are rapidly moving towards a digital identity. The EU is already encouraging companies such as Amazon to require it for purchases, and Facebook to "verify" your account. For now, this requirement is optional and mainly concerns government agencies: health, postal services, tax authorities. But eventually, it will no longer be optional. With the digital euro on the way, there is a risk that control over our lives will become total. The digital euro is a programmable currency: the EU will therefore be able to decide what you buy, for how much, and even make your money expire. Digital ID, meanwhile, could serve as a digital pass and a Chinese-style control system. It will decide what you are allowed to do on the internet, but also where you are allowed to go.
