rip hashtag following… looks like its being abused by spammers. This was expected tbh. You can go to your profile and remove all hashtag follows until we have better tools to deal with this.

I was considering the idea of "funded hashtags" that can be paid, with for example 1-10 sats. This would make it costly to spam such funded hashtags. The funded hashtags would be a separate system vs regular hashtags. The funding amount could go to the relays that transmit the funded hashtags. This would not be a perfect system and spam would still happen, but it might be worth a thought.
That would greatly limit notes from new people though, which I find the most interesting thing about hashtag follows, finding new people.
These could be two different options though, don’t see why not
I don't really follow any hashtags for this reason, I have been following #introductions to try and welcome people but a lot are just spam/bots now. Sad.
we literally mentioned this while back. . it was once a feature on snort [adding hashtags that would not appear on the note content] . glad to see the spam is caught in the net Will . :)
I suspect most spammers are government agencies trying to take down a system they can't control, or activists groups, or ... of course ... scammers trying to get money out of people.
Nostr was never going to survive without solving the "bot hell" problem, which I honestly think proof of work could help solve. Nostr protocol should be exchanging user agents and it wouldn't be impossible to require proof of work appropriate for either mobile or desktop clients. Of course, the capability of a desktop client will be absurdly disproportionate to what mobile clients can do.

That is exactly why I never use hashtags on any platform ever. Hashtags take on only the worst aspects of regular text search and actual moderated tags.

Nobody wants to put in the work to make the training set needed for high quality results. Any AI generated hashtags a guarunteed to be trash.

Hashtags were ruined from the start. It just took a bit of spam for the rest of you to see it.
