It's becoming increasingly hard to run a Lightning node over the past year. Self custodial Lightning with a great user experience is hard enough, without having USA regulatiors breathing down your neck. I wish this team and their users the best of luck.

I was wondering if they were shutting down just because they were US based. In a sense, I can't really blame him. I wouldn't want Feds breathing down my neck either.

what's the reason for regulation? Just uncle sam wanting his cut?
RIP to another layer 2 solution. $800K goodbye.

I don't think the regulatory environment played a part, from reading Tony's blog. It just looks like their end user wallet did not deliver the UX they hoped.
Are the big name folks doing anything to work with regulators to try and enshrine (and not regulate the F out of) self custody and self hosting?
Right. They didn't mention it and I didn't mean to imply that was the reasoning. I'm just stating that the hostile environment doesn't make operations easier.
What changed that made "increasingly hard" to run a ln node over the past year?
