Rohatsu (臘八) does literally means the 8th day of the 12th month. But among Zen people it means that sesshin that starts on the 1st. The ceremony that is held on the 8th to commemorate the Buddha's enlightenment is called Jyōdōei (成道会).
So Dec 4th is the 中日 or middle day of that sesshin.
