One thing which confuses me about social media is the endless cycles of drama and gossip.
Take this one for example, there's some huge drama about a twitch streamer. There's a conspiracy theory that he's using a shock collar on his dog.... As far as i can tell, it's just a vibrating collar... But i don't get it... I mean secretary of homeland security Kristi Noem proudly told the story of shooting and killing her family dog... Even Mitt Romney strapped his dog on the roof of his car while going on a family road trip vacation.
Shock collars might not be great, but they're a perfectly common tool sold in most pet stores... How can somebody be canceled for a rumor that they might use one, and are hiding the evidence despite live streaming their own live 24/7?

I haven’t heard about this drama. But it is not surprising. That’s what NPCs do.
Most likely, a rumour was turned into an opportunity and a smear campaign was launched. Because of his leftist views, he has become the target of many people. He was even detained at the airport not too long ago.
but why would how he treats his dog have anything to do with how he talks about politics?

Engagement. Eyeballs. Advertisements. Profit.
The masterplan for the downfall of civilization?
Piker has been preaching violence for years, and none of his followers batted an eye.
It wasn't until he used a shock collar to punish his dog for stepping off the bed she's forced to lay on on for 4+ hours at a time, that his audience is waking up to what a piece of shit he is.
Some part of that backlash could very well be stoked by ulterior motives, sure. This is an information war, and there a lot of powerful interests that want to see Piker's influence continue to grow.
This usermag.co editorial is garbage propaganda btw. And not garbage as in false. Garbage as in not-even-good-at-being-propaganda propaganda.
It's just weak anecdotal arguments in support of Piker, weak emotional arguments against "the far right", and then page after page of conflating livestreaming with involuntary surveillance, claiming this drama is indicative of some existential threat, and then the pièce de résistance closer and not-so-subtle endorsement of Piker's anti-capitalism agenda:
"Profit-driven tech platforms ensure that bad actors and extremists reign, and we’ve allowed tech oligarchs to dismantle all vestiges of a shared reality."
The whole thing reads like a fluff piece somebody would write if they NEEDED to defend Piker.
I've been hassled for using a shock collar before. I think the context matters but it is easy to judge without gathering that information.
You could absolutely use a shock collar just to be cruel. Or, maybe you just got a rescue dog that likes to try to run off, can easily get to the nearest highway to get run over, and you tested the collar on yourself so you know exactly how much it hurts.
