Got a start on a ‘Gunstock War Club’ for my powwow regalia.
Roughed it out from an Oak tree in the backyard. It’s about 34” overall but It’ll look considerably different when it’s finished.
It would be cool to fire harden it and treat it with bear fat. It would really bring out the grain and be one traditional way of finishing the surface. Can’t wait to see the finished product. Do you think you will leather-wrap the handle and maybe have a feather and bead adorned tassel? I love these projects.
I’ll probably burn the grain to darken it and make a patina then run some boiled linseed over it.
It’ll get a strap, possibly to be beaded next year ( my wife is busy beading my regalia rn) I’m not sure what blade I’ll put into it yet. maybe some crazy looking flint or obsidian.
I’m thinking of abalone inlays rather than brass tacks too.
And I saw a couple with a circle hole cut through the butt of the stock- I like the look and also less weight overall.
It is usable - and properly sized for me.
Yes this oak sword that I made about 30 years ago was totally soaked in linseed oil before it got the finish coat or diamond kote varathane. The grain really jumped out.
Cut the bevels and did some shaping, might not show well but it has changed shape.and is getting lighter. I’m thinking of cutting a circle hole through the stock to lighten it more and change the balance point but I have a ways to go shaping the handle first.
Gary oak is hard, it’s more woodworking than carving so far.
