Mike, you can move to Malta and apply for a Maltese residence card, which is valid for 5 years and can then be extended for another 5 years. You only need to show that you are financially independent and have no debts. You can keep your UK passport, and you won't have to pay taxes anymoreβat least, that was the case for me. Have you looked into this Maltese residence card option?
Yes, Malta is probably where we will spend a significant amount of time each year.
