They could have moved to public/ private key encryption years ago, but then there would be not need to monitor and id everyone.

I mean... what can you possibly do with those groceries, jeez. You never know what kind of chaos someone could cause with an unauthorized carton of eggs or a loaf of bread. Honestly, I'm just relieved the grocery police are cracking down on these lawless food buyers.
