The painful lesson is that self custody is a tradeoff that doesn't make sense for most people (yet), but the reason why isn't totally obvious. 1. The fiat economy produces what people need, the bitcoin economy does not. We are all dependent on the fiat economy. You need fiat to access the fiat economy. Which means you need offramps or proxy merchants to solve a problem that only exists if you self custody. 2. Understanding entropy is hard. Vast majority of bitcoin influensoors etc don't even understand it. We have a LOT of work to do if we want a bitcoin standard (which requires self custody). We need to produce goods and services that are in demand and unavailable within the Fiat economy for there to be a reason to even consider it. We need to figure out self custody primitives that can be learned as easily as using a kitchen knife or driving a car. Some of the most advanced people in the space can't get self custody 100% perfect (if you were worried about your corn for more than 3 seconds after hearing about cold card then you're not doing it right). That means we have a BIG problem if we expect normal people to self custody. We also need to stop being priests acting as middle men and create better pathways for ordinary people to have a *direct* relationship with the Protocol and figure things out for themselves, that's the whole reason the whitepaper was published on that particular date.

Maybe not. Maybe self custody should be hard. Like learning a language or playing the piano. Maybe it does need to start when you're young. It needs to be taken seriously. The "let's make self custody easy for all" almost sounds like another scam at this point. Not accusing you of that, but just saying. Maybe we need to acknowledge the situation and face it, rather than look for simple solutions. Maybe I'm wrong. If I say maybe one more time....
In a cypherpunk future, where people live online without trusted third parties, they need to be able to guard their own little secret keys. That's a must. We need and we will develop better tooling for that.

You must be wrong if individual sovereignty is to gain traction in the oncoming global government panopticon.
What @gsovereignty said 👇, but Houston, we have a problem. “The first rule of [self-custody] is don’t talk about [self-custody].” To talk about self-custody is to reveal custody. When you become your own bank—YOU ARE NOW A BANK and the (numerous) Willie Sutton’s of the world have their eyes on you, be they: -independent thieves wielding wrenches or piloting computers (the latter being the bigger threat) -organized crime whether kidnappers, protection rackets, wealth extracting clans or tax harvesting governments (the latter two extracting “legally”) -the often miserable jealous public (sometimes including friends and family) who like ”crabs in a pot” will fight to stop you from getting ahead and revel when things go south. Existing in a highly hostile world with a legal system (see “wealth extracting clans above”) that most effectively serves itself, is driving us back to medieval time of castles, false walls to secret chambers, moats, draw bridges, parapets and canons is exhausting and seemingly for the few. In addition to the points made by @gsovereignty the conversation possibly needs to be cleaved into two distinct topics; exchanges (ouch) and wallets for the masses; vaults for the self-sovereign. Personally? I’m in Bitcoin and self-custody for the win. View quoted note →

It’s not impossible—we just need to incentivize decentralized supply-chain risk assessment of chip production, implementation, and deployment in order to protect entropy source, casting, and immutability at both the hardware and software levels. And the value prop of 2/3 multisig with geolocation spread will become easier to understand once the wrench attacks become more prevalent. Proof of understanding will be represented by the act of opting into the decentralized proof of entropy and multi-sig best practices arcs. All of this will accelerate once the elite stop or can’t stop fiat price controls of hard money.
fiat+bank = accountability shifted from individual to institutions with crowd funded insurance, with unnoticeable traded-off sovereignty depreciation. bitcoin + self-custody = you build the bank, security and insurance yourself. people are not doing that simply because their time has to be spent building their own way of living other than building their own bank with no money to put into. I personally will choose the later thb, but let's be honest, it's still a Utopias. brighter side is, the former is bringing uprisings and chaos, not necessarily in a dramatic way but in way, frog in the water way. Maybe humans will start self host some hard assets after the majority of the countries in the world went thru the pains of Argentina/El Salvador, idk, hard to say. anyway, PV and peace of mind.

Fiat economy a euphemism for Rothschild and Rockefeller controlled debt slavery, bitcoin a threat to their dynasty.
