Anyone can have a relay and use it. The technology is sound. Whether people use it well. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

Here's more information for your knowledge hole about the outbox model.

What is the Nostr Outbox Model? #HOWDONOSTR The Nostr Outbox Model (NIP-65) allows users to define which relays they want to use for sending notes directly within their profile, improving efficiency and relay management. By declaring this in a special event kind via their profile relay settings, users set preferences on where their events should be sent. This reduces user confusion and fuels decentralization. The simplest take away here is that users no longer need to have a shared common relay between them to communicate. Clients handle all of the heavy lifting for them. This change simplifies both the client experience and relay coordination, aligning with decentralized social networking principles. With the Outbox Model, users can use a variety of small and community relays, and still communicate with one another. What does this look like and how does this work in practice? https://how-nostr-works.pages.dev/#/outbox Here is a great article on the Outbox model by @hodlbod if you'd like to learn more: https://habla.news/u/hodlbod@coracle.social/8YjqXm4SKY-TauwjOfLXS

You are not confined/limited to one relay. You can broadcast your content to thousands of relays if you want to, and even rebroadcast any of your notes to additional relays after you initially post them.
When they have to start complaining about you, it’s because you are winning.

How's the average person know that safest ones to choose? Seems like a shot in the dark
It kind of is. I dont know that "safe" is necessarily a criteria... i don't think connecting to a relay exposes anything other than the notes you send to it. And all notes posted to nostr should be done assuming it's for public consumption anyways. Generally bigger relays will have more connected users providing further reach (caveat outbox model per derek). I think its more important checking the uptime of a particular relay and if there are any/many errors. I know you can see this info in amythest. Not sure abt any other client.

Nostr is opaque to new users. In ActivityPub it's easy to judge instances because usually their rules are clear and their blocklists are public. It's pretty much impossible to judge Nostr relays in a similar way. Every relay looks the same to a new user. It's no wonder this guy thinks what he does. Nostr doesn't have a way of refuting him.
The only way to "not be censored" is to not say anything, strictly speaking I think influencers need to accept they cannot reach everyone freely, it is an illusion But Nostr provides a good place free of many of the social media fuckery. And you don't need to provide any details to "sign up"
