This user deleted his profile shortly after joining Nostr, but it wasn't because of the community. If you read the early comments before he deleted his profile, you'll see Nostriches providing help. They're giving him instructions on how to find tune his feed, choose his own algorithm, and make the most of Nostr - no matter the content.
I don't think we as a community could have done any better in this example.
I believe this failure at user retention was not at the fault of the community, but more so on the user not willing to learn.
Could we have done better? Sure. There's always room for improvement.
However, the user needs to be willing to learn as well. They need to be willing to step outside their comfort zone, just a little, and learn.
Better luck next time.

There seem to be a lot of talk about bitcoins here. I’m not very interested in that. Are nostr just for people interested in bitcoins?

Too much (Nostr) push.
Hah. Apparently we had similar thoughts.

He just wasn't ready for this yet
100% agree.
If the UI/UX were good, the community wouldn’t need to hand-hold every new user.
This includes user, topic, and feature discovery.
Sure, we have a lot of work to do there with onboarding, but having a community offering help is also a great way to gain back the humanization of social media that's been lost over the years.
Sometimes it is overzealous Bitcoiners yelling get a lightning wallet over and over again, but that wasn't the case here.
Agree. He'll come back when he's ready and hopefully when he doesn't even realize it 🫂🥹
Says a lot, when one of the worst things about Nostr is Bitcoiners aggressively wanting to send you free money 😂
The best way to make great friends with a lot to talk about isn’t always to work on entertaining new friends and becoming like them…
But it is to consistently do the things you want to do and be the places that you want to be. Then be open to the people that you meet there. You both are there because you want to be.
It’s why so many. Nostriches experience “friends at first sight” when they finally meet.
There are going to be a lot of different people here. We should be helpful.
It’s a matter of time. Let it grow organically.
He is just not fed up enough with legacy social media.
I think we will see him again.
Nobody knows… but Nostr will be there
When trending content stops being about bitcoin, things will get better.
There are players and then there are NPC’s
Nostr is for players.
X/Insta/Reddit for the rest.
🧡🍻👊🏻
The human side of #Nostr is the best part. I remember when I joined I had tons of questions and people were always willing to help. Nostriches are keen to see #Nostr succeed
"The algorithms must think for me. I can't bear to."
Having that layer zero foundation helps cement beautiful relationships.
It's funny because it's true. We want Nostr to succeed and we want new users to feel welcome.
In fact, the community is what makes #Nostr different from Farcaster. I tried Warpcast for a bit, but it never felt as friendly as Nostr and was mostly crypto stuff and air drops and minting NFTs
He need more bitcoin 😅
Mass adoption happens when new users don’t have to ask or learn.
This is on the clients.
New users give up when they detect no traction on getting what they seek among: content variety, engagement quality, real world value, engagement feedback, realized self-sovereignty, tech ease, clear and useful toolsets.
As a user that has onboarded in the last couple months and still has no real world friends that are active here, I think the best thing I have to offer is my tech ux experience. I’ve been asking myself:
Who do I talk to that will listen and implement what we come up with?
Do I publish my thoughts in a vacuum regardless of potential utilization?
I engage with the bleeding edge.
I can be patient on the cutting edge.
Use case creativity is fun at the edge.
Masses adopt honed use case flows.
The protocol and relay network is still young for mass scale and the abuses that come with it. Abuse to the system comes with both massive intended use and malicious misuse.
Here’s to looking into the fog, with goals, skills and optimism!

Early adopters are a different breed. They sense the superiority of some technology and give it a whirl. #Nostr currently is for early adopters

The problem lies in there's more bitcoin community than there is any other community on nostr. Thus it's hard for people to come here and find a relatable community that's not talking about bitcoin too, and that can be pretty repetitive and off putting, especially when just getting started and not understanding on the same level as others around you, when you just wanted some new cooking recipes, etc.
Agree. There's very little here for just one community type. It's mostly Bitcoin with overlap into several others. i.e. loves me some food pics, but I'm also a Bitcoin.
you get into nostr at the price you deserve
I always try to engage new people and tell them to engage with lots of people. I have really enjoyed my time here chatting about so many things. Some people need the spoonfeeding I guess.
Precisely.
I think over time Nostr will evolve to be about many things and the fact it’s powered by Bitcoin will become more secondary but at the same time, the conversation must continue in order to keep building for the future.
It's not really powered by Bitcoin though. That's just a side quest. The two go hand in hand, but Nostr doesn't need bitcoin.
Farcaster sounds horrible. I'm imagining each user trying to scam the next.
The fact that you have to study nostr and understand all these different types of relays, and NIPS and learn how set all these things up is a much bigger barrier than most people on here are willing to admit. Huge survivor's bias.
When there's an app/website where new users can just open it up and have it walk them through the absolute minimum setup and help with the optional things, when we'll see substancial adoption. No more having to ask for help or get a bunch of unsolicited advice.
You should not have to do this. Nostr is very technical still. Developers know this and they're working on improving UX. It just takes time. Until then, the community has to educate and onboard, IMO.
nostr filters out the dopamine addicts naturally. it is working as intended.
Man... Nobody welcomed me like that. How'd this guy get the red carpet treatment? I didn't stick until my second attempt (a lot changed in a year here).
Time of day and depends if you were lucky enough for someone to find it and engage with it. Welcome to Nostr 😅

I can interact
Ahhh I’ve misunderstood slightly but that’s cool, I’m learning and
came looking for #povertystr and #hungerstr 🤷♂️ It’s simply “what’s happening” if you think about it.
Agreed
