Looks like #Blockstream treated the whitehat too lightly and it's going to backfire. The negation over funds was not about "fair market price" - the whitehat was testing them. He had returned 85%, showing honesty but seriousness, and Blockstream offers only $1.5m. This revelation of greed instead of gratitude is going to be leveraged by the whitehat to justify his theft in his own mind, viewing it as justified against an evil corp and a statement against the poor treatment of vulnerability researchers.

This is a consistent pattern in Bitcoiners: do something in your self interest and broadcast a grandiose, virtue signally reason why it was absolutely necessary that you rip someone off. It's why I go so hard on the Ten31 Shills, the "Red Team" attention whores and the NVKlown antics. Everyone looks at the world through a lens of self interest. There's nothing wrong with that. Although I was personally affected and lost a significant amount of BTC, I support the grey hat hacker. 15% is a fair amount to ask for. If I were the hacker, I would only ask for 5% of the total funds, and I would want to be paid in Monero.

Whitehats disclose. This guy emptied the vault, kept $47M, then invoiced Blockstream for gratitude. Cheap security spend is real. So is the ransom.

There are different legal implications, and the fact that the Monero fund is sent to your address makes it possible to deny knowledge of it. This is very different from everyone being able to see your public blockchain data and movements.
