They've been replacing everyone's electricity meters with smart meters that apparently have this capability.
It's always for your benefit of course.
Crazy that they were able to selectively choose air conditioners though
Some smart thermostats have an embedded feature that you have to opt out of that will take commands.
I've still got an old meter so my AC stayed on the whole time.
