Historically, the Church celebrated Advent, then Christmastide (Dec 25β€”Jan 5), then Epiphanytide. Most Evangelical Protestant churches in America have really lost sight of this history and ignore the historic Church calendar. Like so many other things, I think the modern Church really robs itself of a lot of joy by not observing Christmas as a whole season. Our church celebrates the Twelve days with various events throughout and we cap it off with a formal Twelfth Night ball on Jan 5. I should look into some solid reading material on it myself. What I have learned has been from scattered sources and from folks at our church. We will be going to our church service soon and I'll ask around for any good resources on the history of Christmastide and report back to you.
