Nah. Japan has zero resources. They must import virtually everything, including food and energy. They could never survive on their own closed off. Not for a year. NK either, but at least they have some resources.

It's not all about natural resources; if you make good products and technologies, you also win.

That's my point. They didn't. Without being a part of the globe, without the US security garauntees, they wouldn't have been able to thrive in the early tech space. Nevermind they relied on heavy exports in the 70s and 80s for those products. Perhaps I misunderstood your comment about Japan being a self sufficient closed system that thrives.
