When I checked on the nest this morning, one of the babies is gone. I looked around to see if it was a flight attempt gone wrong and did not find him. I’m praying nothing got him and that he just flew away prematurely. Sad day for me anyways.
No telling. Could just be nature doing what nature does. If they find enough food on their own, they won't come back to the nest, assuming they're like the other birds.
I only watched a few nests in my lifetime and know the following:
Great Tit:
They all go at the same time, or within half a day max. Nobody ever returns to the nest. They still get fed by their parents while they awkwardly fly from tree to tree. They master proper flight within a day.
Blackbird:
They sorta get regular feathers and just let themselves fall from the nest on the floor incapable yet of proper flight. They live on the floor for a couple of days while dad still feeds them and mom starts a second batch of eggs. Repeat until mid-summer, safety in numbers. They are physically incapable of getting back to the nest. If one leaves the nest they all go.
Magpie:
Only found out recently. They build a nest up high in a tree but not all the way at the top. Youngsters start climbing around the nest for about a week while trying to balance and practice flight, they won't leave the tree and go back to the nest come darkness. Once they start flying they all leave the same day and never return to the nest.
I have no idea about hummingbirds but i don't know of any bird that comes back to the nest after it leaves. His time had come, he had the strength. Now it's up to you.
If you love them, set them free!
