being that we have LLMs to write most of the code for us now, it's doubly inexcusable. anyway, they are just trying to sell their premium services and hold customers, and first step is locking them in, at least subtly, so that when they do pay, they are likely to keep paying, and make the VCs and bean counters happy. they aren't very competent or creative entrepreneurs, let's just say.
