being that we have LLMs to write most of the code for us now, it's doubly inexcusable.
anyway, they are just trying to sell their premium services and hold customers, and first step is locking them in, at least subtly, so that when they do pay, they are likely to keep paying, and make the VCs and bean counters happy.
they aren't very competent or creative entrepreneurs, let's just say.

They may be very competent for all I know. If the theory is true, and it feels like it is, it just feels scummy and counter to the very culture they promote. Disappointing if that's the case, yet I see no better explanation.
