Has anyone used FOSS versions of Chromecast? Like using a raspi or other hardware device?

No but I got some on Google TVs for dirt cheap and you can put a different launcher and even side load it if you want because it's Android.
I currently have regular old Chromecast that work just fine but I want to remove all googly stuff from my house.
Download projectivity launcher. Get rid of that Google crap on the home screen.
The old Chromecast don't have a home screen or anything. It only can cast. I want the same thing. A dumb device that will let me be able to cast to it.
Not the same thing but started using Kodi recently. I like it but there's some setup involved.
Do you have running on your phone or a stand alone device on the TV ?
They do not exist or are all slow and cooked. Much like yours probably. Grab an onn stick. I got em on clearance for $11 a piece. Google TV is the only partially FOSS thing I know of. Get a custom launcher on it. You can cast just like now, only difference is a home screen and a remote (which you can tune to your TV, so you only need the one remote) oh and it's a lot faster than the old Chromecast. If you don't like it, it's $11...
