⚡️ MORE - Antioch was destroyed several times throughout its history. On December 13, 115, a violent earthquake nearly killed Emperor Trajan and his successor Hadrian, and caused the deaths of approximately 250,000 people. The Roman Empire then mobilized all its resources to rebuild the city. In May 526, another earthquake claimed nearly 250,000 victims. The Eastern Roman Empire launched a new reconstruction effort. More recently, the two major earthquakes of 2023 caused the deaths of more than 59,000 people in Turkey and neighboring Syria. Turkey, in turn, has committed to rebuilding the city.
