I have a real hard time believing $300 is the actual cost. I'm no expert here, but my form of self hatred is trying to build a non-dimensional lumber non-standard construction build, and I gotta be real honest that 300 price tag seems off by at least 20k if you dont have slave labor

Right! So "$300 for a house" seems a little disingenuous. I can say paint and canvas only cost 50 bucks. However for a masterpiece it took a man a non trivial amount of his time to paint it. The labor must be calculated, the cost to build something in materials is typically the least expensive aspects to a self-build, but the time and labor are the biggest factors. Maybe I could build an adobe brick house (not in my region though, thats certain), but if I were to do it alone without hired labor the time to complete something like that would be measured in years. And while idealistically I would agree that "years" is not entirely unreasonable or unrealistic, the fact is it wouldnt be livable for most modern humans standards for most of the build time. I love seeing these types of projects, but the hard reality is by and large they rely on "volunteer" labor to work, otherwise they would be dead in the water. Having worked on one of those youtuber desert projects (not as a volunteer) and seeing behind the veil of what the motives and methods are, I'm telling you, it's not an equitable exchange for the people that show up to those build sites out in the desert to "learn" how to build a cob/adobe/rammed earth/etc house. Thank you for coming to my obnoxious TEDstr talk. My fingers started typing and I couldnt stop them. Gfy ily
