The trade off of self hosting your notes is every users phone fills up faster. The trade off of external third party infrastructure/centralized servers is you rely on others to host your notes. The trade off of self hosted infrastructure is that it needs to be maintained. The only solution I see to this is some sort of hashing/compression algorithm distributed via torrents where every note generated has an output that’s shared across users in a WoT which might minimize space but still storage is the primary chokehold overall. The only way we can fix this is we start a Nostr superman 5D crystal hardware server thingy like @Start9 @Umbrel ☂️ where realistically the compressed hashed torrented data generated by a WoT network wouldn’t realistic be filled up unless transhumanism/tree of life/fountain of youth/etc. is accomplished, and we live longer than 120+ years.

The problem with the wot/mesh/torrent hosting however is you’re hosting fractions of other users notes, which could be a problem for less active users that don’t post as many notes which means the people they follow take up space on their phone but I’m assuming this could be offset with some zapping mechanism, PoW, or a specialized client where users enter knowing the risks of using the opt in feature on the client.
