You can also add wss://freelay.sovbit.host and wss://pipe.imwald.eu, for general-purpose relays.
For documents (longform, highlights, wikis, publications, gitstuff) add wss://thecitadel.nostr1.com.
For profiles use wss://profiles.nostr1.com

So many people were using that relay for so many things that it was a gigantic monster to maintain, but it earned him no income and caused Nostr to be too centralized.

Yeah. This is one of the reasons that while I hope for nostrs success, I don't think it will succeed. I think that if it takes off, it will have the same issue as email. Only mega corps will want to run it for free, mining all your data. They will add actually good spam filters and content moderation so all other relays will be so full of spam that nobody will want to use them (if 90% of content is in 5 heavily moderated relays, while the rest is full of spam and CP, literally nobody will use those). Then all other relays will be marked as spam by default. Then only allowed to use their relays from their client. And we are back at where we started

audience and traffic has value, Twitter was not acquired for nothing. I would not be surprised if a relay is sold for a huge amount of sats in the future

People can’t expect to have their stuff stored for free forever, so I think that would be totally acceptable.
I suspect this is the inevitable outcome of all relays. I don’t think there is any incentives to run a relay for free, and people don’t want to pay…

I (and anyone else) can pull all the data from a relay like the Damus relay and store it on my own relay, which means the data stored on any relay is worth nothing because it can be easily copied.
Bitcoin has zero value because it can be forked.
Network effect, the fact that Damus is used in so many clients and account. It’s central in the nostr web. Client use Damus to build a feed, because there is content. Everything in its infancy cost time energy and money. The first million coin that satoshi mined costed him money
exactly. on my relay we have a 14 day auto delete on the free tier, and you pay if you want to keep it on longer
That's what I do on pipe. I just roll off anything over 300k events, or with an overdue expiration tag or deletion request. That's plenty useful and that keeps it from exploding.

Will has done this 3 times i think over the last 3 years, where he deleted everything and started over.
i've been running many relays for several years. nostrplebs.com is offset slightly by users having to buy a nostr address to use it. however, nostrelites.org is free to all people whom i follow and whom they follow. it's a WoT relay. i don't think i've ever got any specific type of donation for it.

if you go into your relay settings or network settings or server settings and if you see relay.damus.io listed, you should remove it and add one of the ones i mentioned.

I think Nostr will succeed to the degree that it remains a relatively niche protocol and platform, preventing many of the issues that come from scale.
@Derek Ross the nip 65 lists are the part that will lag. plenty of people will update their client and still hand out a dead relay in their outbox for months.
Its good time to run your own relays, costs are not high and everyone can make nostr more decentralized
@DrShift does it rewrite the broken list in place, or just show you what is wrong so you can fix it in your own client? most of the broken nip65 lists i have run into came from one client overwriting what another one already wrote.

I'm not sure that can happen if it becomes obvios that nostr growth is stopping, relays will start going down. Nobody wants to run servers for a stale project that is never going to live to it's full potential

It's designed to overwrite in place. Means if your client overwriting it's broken again.
