Did some #bitchat testing earlier.
It worked outside with an open line of sight within a range of approximately 90 meters which is ~295 feet...not quite 1 American football field from goal line to goal line.
That's clear line of sight though in open air, not living room to living room across a typical residential street through two building shells worth of mass attenuating the Bluetooth signal.
I wonder if it will work between across-the-street neighbors.

Going to try this with a neighbor about 500ft away.
We played with it as a bunch of Bitcoiners camping remotely. Very little to no mobile reception.
Superfast around the campfire.
If someone shut down the app, they would lose chat history but then would regain it when they rejoined (as long as someone had left it running.
Really weird as a social experiment considering we didn't usually have our phones out. It was like a second conversation was running parallel.
Now, if you could get seven hops, which is the maximum they allow, you could get 2065 feet. That's less than half a mile.
