European countries believed, in a way that had never happened before, that history was truly over and that things were going to simply keep going smoothly until the end of times.
Every empire in the history of the world uses the strategy of pushing its colonies outside of history so to speak. The Roman empire did The same with its "clientes". The American empire did this to a degree of effectiveness which is now negatively surprising its leaders, who were not expecting the European countries to become so completely oblivious of how the world actually works.
