Somewhat unrelated, but I think Reddit-like communities have a better chance to succeed than topic-specific relays. I think relays are slightly harder to understand as a concept and they work better as something which is "transparent" to the user: a mere technical detail most of the time, which the user doesn't have to keep track of. Users shouldn't be expected to manually select relays every time they post. A solution can be that of having a community and hosting it on a relay specific for that community. Alternatively, a relay could fetch and store events with a given hashtag.

We selected outlets and wrote a script to include their notes. The feed includes participants from the Journalism Accelerator as well as other outlets with consistent note publishing cadence.

The issue is with posting to the news-specific relay to begin with.

If the purpose is that of having RSS bots it might make sense. I thought the idea was having users specifically electing to push to the news relay when they post news, which I think is unlikely to become a common practice unless it's automated in some smart way.

I've never used relays for specific content. I follow people and that's my usual feed. So I want to see news from this relay, I add it and then? Go to global? I'm using amethyst BTW.

I’m not familiar with the UI in amethyst but you would want to switch the feed to view only news.nos.social to see the news feed. @Vitor Pamplona do you support single relay views?
