During my pilot training I went through 5 different teachers which was frustrating. Once I've understood to pick the best out of them and I developed my own style (not techniques) everything was fine for me.

Might depend on the topic. The older I get the more I distance from former Heros in one particular domain. Somehow you pick a bit from here and there and thus teach yourself.
