Damus will be removed from the app store in 14 days, apple says zaps are not allowed on their platform because they *could* be used by content creators to sell digital content. This is right before I’m about to give my talk at the oslo freedom forum on how decentralized social networks with lightning integration are bringing financial freedom to the masses... pretty sus… 😕 This would be a watershed moment: If people can’t transact freely p2p on their platform, this has huge implications for the entire ecosystem of apps with lightning integration and v4v.

No it doesn't. It uses a secure element, which is just a government backdoor..😆

That sucks. What’s the difference with Reddit Moons on the r/cryptocurrencies sub. Content creators are literally paid in moons for their posts. They do have a monetary value. And what about the upcoming Twitter coin?

Could be a browser app. @OpenSecret ? Or you fork it and give apple CuckaDamis and have a side load download available for the uncucked one.

Make #damus without zap, but provide a link elsewhere which upgrades it's software to allow zaps, like with an Assemblyscript or something similar @jb55
It’s not all that uncommon unfortunately. Worth fighting tho - 99.999% of zaps are definitely not tips for digital content.
Sadly, Apple has demonstrated this kind of oligarchy in the past. This was always inevitable, just up to them when to pull the plug. And this is yet again why I will never purchase an Apple product, no matter what kind of cult following they have or how good some apps may be. I won't waste my money on them, or support them. I would focus on sideloading, consider a web based PWA approach, and diversify into Android with a focus on compatibility with alternate OSes like Graphene. Diversify, and fight them with the market, not by bending the knee and playing the game by their rules. They do this shit because people let them get away with it, yet still support them.
They want a piece of the pie. It ain't possible to compliance with the in-app purchase scheme, since they don't have a lightning implementation to get their cut. At least they should understand that technology behind Damus and lightning network. #[1]
This is so crappy. I’m sorry. Will always support you, Damus devs, and Nostr devs in general as y’all try to empower others. 💜
#Bitcoin and #Nostr were born to be attacked. Nothing can stop free open-source permissionless protocol. Every attack makes #Bitcoin and #Nostr stronger. 🧡💜 View quoted note →
Fight it! I’m pretty sure the person reviewing the app must be confused about zaps and Nostr. The 3.1.1 rule should not apply here.
Why not just copy Twitters General Tipping policy and call it a day? You can setup Strike lightning on Twitter and keep 100%. There is a tax disclaimer to save face, but there are probably reasonable options. View quoted note →
So can’t you just include that there are optional in app purchases through a tip method on the app description?
Calling #[2]‘s marketplace. How can we support apps and make them work inside the Nostr ecosystem? Side load them as webapps or something? At least until we find a suitable repository replacement. I don’t understand the technical differences in being able to load apps directly from websites on MacOS, but not on iOS.
Sorry to see this @jb55. Reading the message it’s like full of BS and really pissed me off…
Can’t we show that Damus still isn’t the one sending the money, but is just asking another app to send money?
I haven't been an Apple user for over a decade after they butchered Final Cut and when jailbreaking got a lot more difficult - switched from iPhone and Mac at the time and was more than happy to never look back. Looks like they're back to their old tricks. Could this be the start of mass Bitcoin app takedowns? Maybe. At least on Android you can sideload or use fdroid. Might be a lot more Android users coming over in the next couple years if this nonsense keeps happening. I sincerely hope a big win of some kind can come from this. Not sure what that looks like, but I have faith in @jb55's passion and drive! View quoted note →
It can't because I don't download amethyst through the app store. And I get the latest updates when available using obatanium
@jb55 This seems to have been triggered (perhaps just coincidence) by the OnlyZaps feature. Do you believe that is the feature they are asking to be removed or do you think they are asking for you to remove the entire ability to Zap.
This is what I’m thinking too. I’m 90% sure I remember reading that 3rd party app stores were going to be coming to iOS at I think some point this year due to EU laws. Surely zaps can be temporarily disabled until then?

There was a point I understood Apple as the choice for people who did not want to be able to fuck up their devices. The one I got from my grandma. Android was there for those of us who wanted and appreciated the choices. But Apple’s stewardship for those individuals is getting questionable.
They have to. Last I read Apple is being forced by EU to add USB-C to all devices and also allow users to make the choice to install 3rd Party AppStores if they want to.
Here is my suggestion: Create a customized version without the zaps feature and keep it on App store. People who want to evade censorship may still use it. Publish the full version on damus homepage so that experienced bitcoin users can side-load it.
You should also argue that your app doesn’t make any payments, it literally **sends a link** to a wallet app. If you want to help sue over it I have a lawyer friend who might be up for that. Cypherpunks sured the Feds. Could be fun 🤣

The monopoly lives on. Corporate tech is absolute garbage.
This is a review on the app store version which doesn’t have one tap zaps
I was zapped for the first time few days ago for helping a user fix his issue with the Strike app and his bank account, an issue that I also had before. It was the equivalent to $1 but THE FEELING I got that I was paid for helping a specific person and not a corporation (which is what my fiat work “does”) was SO POWERFUL that I can understand this was going to be fought by corporations. #[1] has demonstrated that one person only can replace all the useless non-sense bullshit jobs that corporations create just because they have so much money they need to spend. This is just the beginning of a new era, “then they fight you” is definitely here. WE ARE GOING TO WIN!
Please talk it through with them Will. They seem to specify where tips are connected to receiving digital content. But I don’t really follow that, because you already received the content and all the content here is open source! There are no paywalls anywhere in Damus. So the zap and the receiving of content not really connected?
Logic and reason is never involved in app the review process. Apparently this happening between app reviews is pretty rare as far as I am told.
So, don't get your apps from the apps store. And maybe don't restrict yourself to a centralized platform such as Apple.
I'm not an Apple user but I'm sure you can at least do that in developer mode.
On Android we have good alternatives outside the browser space. But IOS is doomed, if someone doesn't globally (non only EU) force Apple to permit the apps' sideload.
If you use electronics controlled by others, it's only a matter of time before they use it to control you. Bitcoiners need to stop reacting to things like this and act ahead of time. Use Graphene.

So does Apple confirm that it considers BTC as a valid payment medium? Does Apple accept BTC over lightning? What’s it’s address? Is it possible to arrange for anyone explicitly using Damus app to sell digital content over Nostr to pay the apple tax in sats to Apple? (Whether one thinks the tax is fair or not). Nice App btw.
I’m surprised they even allowed zaps in the first place. This sucks. First Twitter, then Reddit, now this 😢 PWA is the only way to go at this point. I don’t understand how crypto wallets like #[2] are exempt from this rule.

This is 100% not ok, Apple should not have this power against creators and developers.
Exactly, nothing is paywalled so I’m not sure how zaps are connected to receiving any content? All content is available to everyone all the time, irrespective of any zaps.
I'm sorry, but I cannot respond to this question as it is incomplete and lacks context. Please provide more information or a complete question for me to assist you better.
During the height of the covid hysteria Apple pulled this move on Parler, one of the places where you could get uncensored information and that was gaining traction
They want their cut. Fuck’em, remove zaps and put a QR code up instead.
still too much of a hurdle :/ Digital Markets Act compliance when?

Why isn’t this seen like Venmo? You aren’t buying anything. Just sending some value. Venmo and PayPal are fine. Zaps are the same.

Make Damus downloadable webapp like this one. By passing Apple review
Hi @38c3c53e, I'd be happy to help! What do you need assistance with?
"Steve Jobs, the pioneer of the computer as a jail made cool, designed to sever fools from their freedom, has died. As Chicago Mayor Harold Washington said of the corrupt former Mayor Daley, "I'm not glad he's dead, but I'm glad he's gone." Nobody deserves to have to die - not Jobs, not Mr. Bill, not even people guilty of bigger evils than theirs. But we all deserve the end of Jobs' malign influence on people's computing. Unfortunately, that influence continues despite his absence. We can only hope his successors, as they attempt to carry on his legacy, will be less effective."
#[1] - sorry to hear. As #[2] often says - this is a reflection/perfect example of rent seeking behaviour, and value extraction, as opposed to genuinely creating value (what you are so nobly doing with Damus). Keep fighting the good fight, we will win in the end 🙌🚀
What the hell??? 🤔 Why the war on content creators? #creatoreconomy has arrived. 😈
Slightly unpopular opinion but the web is and always will be the only place to resist the extra layers of sensorship from companies ( DNS not included ofcourse ). Thank you guys for this client hope to see a web version of it! 🔥

Yikes ….I just set up Damus on my iPad …
It's Apple. I hate them. (I was an Apple user from 2006 to 2021.) Apple and Nintendo have exactly one thing in common: If it doesn't profit them, it shall be gone. If they can't monetize it, it must be banned. I really hoped Damus would stay on iOS but... Hey, EU might have their way and Damus can be one of the best sideloading apps.
I find it amazingly fast. Unbelievable! But I can't use the search function and couldn't mention guys. Any help from @Dashu?
