I came to the conclusion, long ago, that the main purpose of mass media, Big Tech social media, politicians, etc is to prevent you from planning and executing your dreams.
People at the helm of those institutions know that our thoughts and beliefs are the basis of reality. The more they can distract you from your dreams, the weaker (and more controllable) you are.
Ignoring their fear-mongering, and other distractions (like the popular vote for President), while focusing on your dreams with action, undermines their whole scheme.

The most punk thing that you can do right now is be happy.
The mainstream wants you exhausted, unhealthy, doomscrolling, angry and pathetic. It drives more clicks and advertisers. Finding true joy has become edgy.

I'm not sure that's the purpose. I think their purpose is to make you addicted to watch, look, and other wise pay attention to them so that they can make money on advertising.
You loosing your dreams because you are now too scared and fearful until the TV shows you a cute puppy is just a side effect.
Ultimately, same conclusion. But i think the fact that they don't even care what happens as long as the ads come in is worse.
Ad revenue is nothing compared to the power of their messages. It's like a tip, in comparison.
Maybe. This is the argument why bezos bought the Washington post for example.
I just don't think they are out to crush dreams as ther main thing. I'd agree with you if you said their main purpose is to spin their message or get influence. So perhaps I'm splitting hairs.
At the end, they really don't care about us anyway.
They don't care about helping us. They do care about using us.
