I'm not sure that's the purpose. I think their purpose is to make you addicted to watch, look, and other wise pay attention to them so that they can make money on advertising. You loosing your dreams because you are now too scared and fearful until the TV shows you a cute puppy is just a side effect. Ultimately, same conclusion. But i think the fact that they don't even care what happens as long as the ads come in is worse.
