I don’t see it happening. It’s only going to get much worse with AI scraping every bit of information about everyone’s lives.

The only way to make any significant impact is to not collect the data in the first place. This is like asking every business to give up some of their revenue. How would that ever fly with the people who are paid by the very players who don’t want regulation?
I mean it would be great if no one collected any info they don’t need, but who is going to see that through?
Increasing fines to % of revenue could be a good start so businesses don’t treat these incidents as a cheap “oopsie”. You’re very right though, it’s a steep uphill battle to change regulation through politicians likely getting kickbacks. Maybe even lobbying laws need to be tackled to cut this thing from its head head.
What I disagree with is throwing our hands up and saying “that’s not changing”. They want you to say that. They don’t want you to have hope. Even talking about these possible fixes right here feeds energy into the right direction.
