Guys PLEASE PLEASE be careful who you help on the internet, I was skeptical to begin with and it turns out I was right. Thanks to @Pitufo for finding these photos, as soon as this account Tina’s Fight against cancer was caught, they instantly deleted it and stopped replying. But they had managed to take almost 1M sats from hard working and trusting plebs here! This is NOT ok. This is the most sick and twisted scam ever, not only because they are exposing a real little girl who probably was dealing with cancer, but also deceiving and stealing from plebs. There are many more accounts like this, like this other one that is very similar! I talked to this account a few days ago and was suspicious how they were replying, they didn’t seem like a grieving mother like they should be. BE CAREFUL!

Jesus Christ, that’s so sad. There’s this account too, not really any success for them yet but they are doing the same thing. image
The worst part is how that money that people sent could have been sent to a real child with cancer. Like that money was sent out of the kindness of people's hearts. It's sick that someone can take money from good people like that.
Exactly, I saw like two people donated over 100k or more, many of these people have a family they could spend the money on.
I was talking with them, seemed scammy, didn’t donate but they raked in thousands.
What an odd thing to think is acceptable, pretending your child has cancer to scam a few sats from plebs. Mind boggles.
Is there a way to see who zapped them so we can go educate them and ask why they were so easily scammed to try to improve ui in the future?

Oh boy! That account has been liking all my posts and replies.
I knew it was possible it was a scam but sent some non trivial amount of sats. Split between the chance there was a genuine need vs a sick scam I chose the former. Well I guess it was a good litmus test - assume scammer even if on Nostr where a lot of good people hang.

I confronted that account as I have knowledge on that type of cancer and called out the plan and "unknown" expenses was dubious. Bitcoin taught us one thing to ALWAYS do... Validate! Doesn't matter if it's a piece of news (don't forward until you have validated it), or someone asking for monetary help. It sucks but draining your account doesn't help the ones who actually do need help and can validate that easily! 3 confirmations from different sources. Simple. Takes work, but that's how you hold people accountable.

I immediately thought this account was a scam, but then I started second guessing myself and considered a donation. I did not end up doing that, thankfully. Really sucks because obviously I think a lot of bitcoiners would be willing to help in this situation. But we can’t trust much these days, can we. Thanks for the post to confirm my suspicion.
This just shows that some folks will go any length to scam others. Greed is at all time high! A lot of folks out there have nothing to be laughing about in this shit economy and will do anything to place themselves in better position. 🤢
yeah … accounts like that are creepy af. Early on, I got into a discussion about a general political topic, and that account ‘liked’ both comments, with opposite pov’s.

Horrible to think someone would use a child’s illness to steal.
Thanks for sharing also had this account interact with my posts and wasn’t sure about it
Good point Anyone you don’t meet face to face I think should be suspect I hardly ever donate for that reason although I like helping people
We will have a lot of this scam in this “transition period “ moving from a parasitical environment to a mutualistic environment. Calling out the scam is the beginning . An ingenious creator will soon design a (system) that will make this scam a “proof of authenticity “ to coin a phrase from our BITCOIN community.

I didn't wanna be that guy but... The child is european and the name on the link was clearly Indian. Not that it's impossible but seems like a dead giveaway. It bothers me that some people are weaponizing others' kindness. Just another reason I feel it's best to help people or community you know
Well shit. I zapped them a decent amount of sats but not a whole lot. I knew I couldn't be sure they were legit, which is why I didn't zap that much. I guess I gotta be even more cautious than that.

the funny thing is that they actually zapped me multiple times to try to get my attention. I post about babies and motherhood, guess I'm an easy target? Hahaha jokes on them. this old hag has been on the internet long enough to see a scam like this from a mile away.
I hope some of the bigger zaps were from the scammers trying to get more attention. When people see others zapping big, they assume the cause is genuine. Lets be on our toes for the next one
Testing for this note… we made six attempts to⚡zap this note, at karo-l@ln.bitdevs.tw, over a period of about 1 hour. All six attempts were successful. Please check on your end to be sure you received. Average zap time was 6810ms (6.8 seconds). We consider this zap time slow... generally, zaps should complete in under two seconds. (Other Nostr users might think your zaps are broken, might not zap you again.) If you wanted to fix this... you could try a free rizful account -- ... if u set it up, pls reply here so we can do this ⚡zap test again.
Yep. That was my thinking too. I’m not giving my sats so you can torture a child with chemo and radiation. And also, it looked like a scam anyway.
Lots of naive people on nostr i guess

They zapped me a bunch of times too. I don't really understand how the hell they made a profit from this. A handful of kind hearted people must have given them a bunch of sats without stopping to question them. Absolutely fucking hate people who take advantage of other people's empathy and humanity.
They made about 700k in zaps, 1.3M in onchain, and their funding link from other social medias made thousands of dollars.
